St Patrick’s Day

Wintercmps

Since I’ve written down my opinion on Back To You, I can’t help but express my opinion on this song too :)

It’s also from Room for Squares and it’s called St Patrick’s Day.
Very mellow, and in that sense (mellow-ness) it outdoes Back To You in many ways.

For you folks out there who have experienced winter when you’re by yourself, either in a room/cafe/anywhere, sitting by the window, sipping a mug of hot coffee/chocolate (I know I have and I know exactly how it feels) - This song is for you!

Lyrics:
——————————————————
Here comes a cold
Break out the winter clothes
And find a love to call your own
You - enter you
Your cheeks a shade of pink
And the rest of you in powder blue

Who knows what will be
But I’ll make you this guarantee

No way November will see our goodbye
When it comes to December it’s obvious why
No one wants to be alone at Christmas time

In the dark, on the phone
You tell me the names of your brothers
And your favorite colors
I’m learning you
And when it snows again
We’ll take a walk outside
And search the sky
Like children do
I’ll say to you

No way November will see our goodbye
When it comes to December it’s obvious why
No one wants to be alone at Christmas time
And come January we’re frozen inside
Making new resolutions a hundred times
February, won’t you be my valentine?

And we’ll both be safe ’til St. Patrick’s Day

We should take a ride tonight around the town
and look around at all the beautiful houses
something in the way that blue lights on a black night
can make you feel more
everybody, it seems to me, just wants to be
just like you and me

No one wants to be alone at Christmas time
Come January we’re frozen inside
Making new resolutions a hundred times
February, won’t you be my valentine?

And if our always is all that we gave
And we someday take that away
I’ll be alright if it was just ’til St. Patrick’s Day

The song/mp3 I won’t provide here. Scram! :)

Fallind

Once upon a time, around the time John Mayer’s Room for Squares album came out, I was going through a mildly rough episode in my life.

It was around this time that I began stuffing music into my ears on an ever increasing basis because I wanted to block out pesky unwanted thoughts. I listened to everything and everykind of music (this doesn’t mean that I’m a music expert, not at all - I simply listened) and by a stroke of luck I heard a song called Why Georgia by John Mayer.

It was a cold day and I was walking alone on a street when I heard Why Georgia, and the moment felt nearly magical. I felt a real connection with that song, knowing that someone else had, at a point in time, experienced what I was feeling at that moment.

After that I started looking for more songs by John Mayer and ended up buying a copy of Room for Squares.  Not all the songs were great, but most were really good, and a few were truly exceptional. As a songwriter, through his impeccable choice of words, I think John has this amazing ability of conveying ideas/situations/story in a lucid manner - crisp and clear like a gazillion megapixel latest plasma TV.

One of the songs that to this very day still rings in my ears is Back To You.
This is part of the verse..

——————————

"..Back to you
It always comes around
Back to you
I walk with your shadow
Im sleeping in my bed
With your silhouette.."

——————————-

"I walk with your shadow, I’m sleeping in my bed….with your silhouette" - this line says it all, nearly poetic and yet simple enough to paint a very clear picture of what it feels like to be in such a scenario.

Sushi1

(cadangan hiasan.. haha)

The first time ever I tried sushi was in 2003. I went to
meet my dad at a hotel in KL, he was involved in an education convention going
on at that time, so as he went about his work, I walked around the hotel and
headed for my favorite place – the cafeteria.

Since I was holding my dad’s pass, I could eat all I want
without paying a single cent (all covered by the organizer of the convention  :D  Once
I got in, I noticed a small sushi bar at one corner of the rather huge
cafeteria. There stood a chef who was busy preparing sushi in the original
manner of preparing it - using his two hands.

The sushis there were slightly bigger than the ones you see
in sushi king and the fish/shrimp/octopus/squid/scallop/ fillets placed on top
of the rice are really thick and fresh. Fresh here means really really fresh,
the fish fillets were still shiny with fish oil/fat.

I started talking to the chef and found out that he has just
returned from a 1 month sushi preparation course in Japan and he then gave me
some tips on how to enjoy sushi.

Basically:

1)
1- Sushi can be held with a pair of chopsticks or
with your hand.

2)
2- When you’re dipping your sushi in soy sauce,
just dip the fillet part and not the rice.

3)     3-
You can add wasabi in your soy sauce if you feel
your sushi is not spicy enough.

4)
4- And the pickled ginger is eaten between sushi/different
types of sushi.

Number 2 is because if you were to dip your rice in the soy
sauce, the rice would soak up too much soy sauce. The saltiness of extra soy
sauce will then cancel out the taste of the fillet on top of the rice ie: no
good- You paid to enjoy the taste of sushi and all you’re getting is the taste of
soy sauce soaked rice.

Number 4 makes a lot of sense actually. Since the fillets
are all raw, the different taste of fish/shrimp/squid etc is subtle. So suppose
you start eating fish sushi and then you want to try some squid sushi, the sharp
taste of pickled ginger will get rid the taste of fish from your mouth so you
can now taste the squid sushi afresh without the fish sushi after-taste.

So it happened, I had my first sushi with the guidance of a chef haha. The sushis were excellent! Fresh fish sushi has this unique sweetness to it (not in a sugary way). The sweetest tasting is squid sushi.. a little chewy but sweet nonetheless.

It’s a pity though that sushis are generally expensive. If only they’re cheaper!

“Falling Awake”

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

It has been said that "Human is a social animal". For you people who are uncomfortable with this statement as it reflects back to the scientific taxonomic order of life forms, there is another saying -"No man is an island".

No matter how you put it, one thing is clear. We need to interact with people, our interaction makes our lives richer. Conversations, no matter how light or heavy, are to us what grooming is to a group of chimps.

Haha.. what the hell am I trying to get at, going from common sayings to chimps.

Basically what I wish to express is this: getting to know someone is an extremely pleasurable experience.

And falling for someone is even more so :)

Haywire

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

My body clock has gone haywire.

Throughout this fasting month, I’ve been sleeping late ~3.00 AM, then I’d wake up around 4.30 AM and have a meal - naturally it’s difficult to fall asleep after a heavy meal - so I’d sit around and finally sleep again and wake up very late sometime near noon. The accumulated effect is certainly not good.

Luckily raya is just around the corner.

Doodle

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

When I was in primary school I was quite a productive cartoonist. Friends would flock to see what I was drawing whenever they spot me holding a pen and a piece of paper.

It’s not that my drawings were super excellent, it’s just that they’re fun to look at plus whenever I drew something back then, it’d be about people that friends knew.
A teacher, another friend, an enemy :P

So every week or so, I”d dish out a new comic book, the drawings were all made on the pages of those little 555 book that were once so abundant but nowadays are getting more difficult to find (really, are they still around?).

But, once I got into high school, I stopped drawing as frequently and that has been the way till today. But occasionally I would still whip out a pen, just doodle and have the same good ole fun that I had when I was in primary school.

This is from today’s doodling. Some of you people who are reading this right now might know him - yes, it’s a caricature of someone. Can you guess who this is? ;)

Nothing seem to be going my way.
Tried this…no didn’t work out.
Tried that….still-a no, that wasn’t it.

All that I was able to achieve is stagnation. Being stuck in a period of time where helplessness and perpetual ignorance seem to be the two biggest presence.
These two would move around and circle me very much the way predators would move around their prey.
The pace, the movement, each step taken is calculated and deliberate. They know how to take their time. And constantly their steely gaze never waver, eyes fixed on me.
How can I not despise these moments…
